Bariloche is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Located in Argentine Patagonia, at the foot of the stunning Andes, it is surrounded by crystal-clear lakes and dense forests, making it a dream destination for travelers.
However, it's important to note that many prices are set in U.S. dollars, which can make the destination a bit pricey, even with the favorable dollar-peso exchange rate.
We recently traveled to Bariloche with our three kids and stayed for three weeks. It was an incredible experience, and we managed to do a lot without breaking the bank. While we had planned to check off some of the top activities, many of them—like taking a ferry—were relatively expensive, especially for a family of five.
That said, there are plenty of amazing things to do that don't require hiring a guide or service, and they’re suitable for people of all experience levels. Here’s a list of budget-friendly activities you can enjoy without the high costs.
Downtown Bariloche

If you stay in accommodations in the downtown area, getting around without a car is easy, making it simple to visit and sightsee. The Civic Center is stunning, and the two main streets, Mitre and (add the second street name here), are lined with shops, chocolatiers, ice cream parlors, and more. There's also a park where you can explore an artisan fair.
In the area, you'll also find the iconic "Bariloche" letters, a popular spot for photos. There's plenty to do downtown, and one of the highlights for us was visiting Rapa Nui, my favorite chocolate shop. They have a fantastic ice rink, the richest hot chocolate, and delicious ice cream and waffles.
If you're staying a bit farther from downtown (which we highly recommend for a quieter experience), it’s very easy to order an Uber or take public transportation to get to the heart of the city.
Cerro Campanario

Cerro Campanario is on KM 17 and part of what is called the “Circuito Chico” a route that can be done by car, bus or trekking. It’s the first stop. It has an aerial chair ride or you can hike it in about 30-45 minunites. We hiked it and our kids loved it. Up the top there’s a mirador with a 360 view of the whole Nahuel Huapi National Park. It is absolutely breathtaking. There’s also a small restaurant to grab something to eat with an amazing view.
Cerro Otto

Cerro Otto is located at Km 4, just a short bus ride from downtown Bariloche. The main way to reach the summit is via the teleférico, a cable car that takes you up to the top. Alternatively, you can hike or drive up to the base and then continue on foot. There is an entrance fee to access the complex, which includes a small museum and a unique rotating café that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and lakes.
At the top, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the Andes and the Patagonian landscape, making it a perfect spot for both relaxation and sightseeing. The rotating café is a highlight, providing an unforgettable dining experience as it slowly turns, showcasing panoramic views of the region.
Circuito Chico, caminata de arrayanes

Circuito Chico is a popular scenic drive and one of the best ways to explore the natural beauty surrounding San Carlos de Bariloche without breaking the bank. The route is about 60 kilometers long and offers breathtaking views of lakes, forests, and mountains. Along the way, you can stop at several viewpoints, including the famous Punto Panorámico, which offers a stunning aerial view of the town and the surrounding lakes. The circuit also passes by the serene Lago Moreno and the charming Colonia Suiza, where you can enjoy a quiet break and perhaps try some local food or visit craft shops. The drive is free if you're using your own car, but there are optional stops, such as the Llao Llao Hotel or the EcoCentro, which may charge small entry fees.
Budget Tip: If you don't have a car, you can also do the Circuito Chico on a bike (which can be rented relatively cheaply) or with a guided tour, which might cost a bit more but can give you deeper insights into the area.
Caminata de Arrayanes (Arrayanes Forest Walk)
The Caminata de Arrayanes is a unique and affordable way to experience one of Argentina's most magical natural sites: the Arrayanes Forest. Located on the Quetrihué Peninsula, the forest is home to a rare species of tree, the Arrayán, known for its striking cinnamon-colored bark. The hike to the forest takes around 1.5 to 2 hours (one way) and covers a well-maintained path that’s relatively easy to walk. The walk itself is serene, with panoramic views of Lake Los Moscos and the surrounding mountains. Once at the forest, visitors can wander among the towering Arrayán trees, which create an almost fairytale-like atmosphere.
Budget Tip: To reach the beginning of the trail, you can take a boat from the town (which is more expensive), but a cheaper option is to take a bus or rent a kayak to the trailhead. Once you’re there, the hike itself is completely free, and the beauty of the landscape makes it well worth the effort.
Both the Circuito Chico and the Caminata de Arrayanes are fantastic budget-friendly ways to experience the stunning natural landscapes of Bariloche, with options for transportation and activities that allow you to tailor your experience to your budget.
Patagonia Cervecería

Cervecería Patagonia is a must-visit for beer lovers in Bariloche. Nestled in the picturesque Patagonia region, this craft brewery offers not only great beer but also stunning views of the surrounding lakes and mountains. The brewery itself is located in a beautiful, rustic building on the shores of Lake Moreno, providing a cozy yet modern atmosphere with large windows to take in the scenery.
The beer selection is diverse, with a variety of high-quality brews that cater to different tastes, from light lagers to rich stouts. Some of the popular options include their Patagonia Amber Lager and the IPA—both local favorites. You can enjoy a beer tasting experience, or simply order a pint while relaxing on the outdoor terrace.
In addition to great drinks, Cervecería Patagonia also offers a menu with local food options, including hearty Argentine dishes like empanadas and grilled meats. It’s a perfect spot to unwind after a day of outdoor activities, or just to spend a leisurely afternoon soaking in the natural beauty of the area.
Budget Tip: While the brewery offers a premium experience, the prices are reasonable considering the quality of the beer and food, especially compared to other tourist spots in the region.
Colonia Suiza
Colonia Suiza is a charming, picturesque village located about 25 kilometers from downtown Bariloche, nestled in the foothills of the Andes. Originally founded by Swiss immigrants in the late 19th century, the village has retained much of its Alpine charm, with rustic wooden buildings and lush green surroundings. It’s a peaceful, serene place to visit, making it an excellent spot for a relaxing day trip.
The village is known for its artisan shops, where you can find local handicrafts, chocolates, and cheeses. There's also a small, lovely park, and a few cozy cafés offering traditional Swiss and Argentine fare. One of the main attractions is the Feria de Colonia Suiza, an artisan fair held on Sundays, where you can browse local crafts, taste homemade food, and enjoy live music.
If you're up for some light outdoor adventure, there are hiking opportunities nearby, and you can also enjoy a scenic boat ride on Lago Moreno. Colonia Suiza offers a great mix of nature, culture, and relaxation, making it a wonderful place to escape the crowds of downtown Bariloche.
Cascada de los Duendes
The Cascada de los Duendes (Waterfall of the Elves) is a hidden gem nestled in the forest near Lake Gutiérrez, just a short drive from downtown Bariloche. It's a stunning, easy-to-access waterfall that offers a peaceful escape into nature. The short hike to the waterfall (about 1.5 km) is relatively easy and takes you through lush forests with vibrant flora and picturesque scenery. Along the trail, you'll be surrounded by towering trees and the soothing sound of water.
The waterfall itself is enchanting, with crystal-clear water cascading down rocky cliffs, creating a beautiful, tranquil spot perfect for photos or simply relaxing and connecting with nature. The name "Cascada de los Duendes" evokes a magical feeling, as if you’ve stepped into a fairytale. The best part? It's completely free to visit, making it an excellent option for those on a budget.
Mirador Gutiérrez
Mirador Gutiérrez is a panoramic viewpoint that overlooks Lake Gutiérrez, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Located along the road to Cascada de los Duendes, it’s an easy stop to take in some of Bariloche's most breathtaking scenery. From the viewpoint, you get a sweeping view of the lake, framed by the mountains and forests, making it an ideal spot for photos. The viewpoint is accessible by car, and there’s a small parking area nearby.
It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area, whether you’re taking a break from hiking or simply want to appreciate the quiet, stunning surroundings. The spot is also relatively peaceful, especially if you visit during off-peak times, giving you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the scenery.
Both Cascada de los Duendes and Mirador Gutiérrez are perfect for nature lovers who want to experience Bariloche’s stunning landscapes without the crowds. They’re both accessible and offer free or low-cost ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Playas- Beaches
Bariloche is famous for its beautiful lakes and stunning mountainous landscapes. While the town is better known for its hiking and skiing, it also offers several lovely beaches along its lakes, perfect for relaxing, swimming, or picnicking in the warmer months. Here’s a brief overview of some of the best beaches in the Bariloche area.

These spots offer a relaxed atmosphere, often with scenic views of Lake Nahuel Huapi and the surrounding mountains, making them ideal for a peaceful break. Influenced by European traditions, many tea houses feature rustic, alpine-style decor and serve a mix of classic black, green, and herbal teas, paired with Patagonian pastries like scones, alfajores, and empanadas.
